Why control design makes or breaks a mobile strategy game

I've played strategy games with genuinely great ideas that I couldn't stand, purely because the controls fought me. On a phone, the interface isn't a detail — it's half the experience. A misplaced confirm button costs you a unit and a mood.

The best mobile strategy games all share a few things. They let you preview a move before committing it. They put the important actions where your thumb naturally rests. And they never bury a critical option three menus deep during a timed decision.

Ashfall Legion, which we reviewed, nails this by letting you undo a move before ending your turn. That one feature removes an entire category of rage-quits, because a mistap is no longer a disaster.

When you're trying a new strategy game, spend the first ten minutes just paying attention to how it feels to move a unit. If that basic loop is smooth, the game has a chance. If it isn't, no amount of clever design will save it for a touchscreen.
